AFTERCARE

OPTION 1: FILM METHOD

OPTION 2: CREAM

Once the tattoo is finished, I will clean the area and apply a transparent film that is waterproof and bacteria proof but still breathable.

You can shower as normal but do not submerge the area or pick at the corners of the dressing.

Leave it on for a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 5 (4 days is ideal)

The dressing will fill with brown fluid, a mix of ink, plasma and blood. This is perfectly normal and supposed to happen as it helps the tattoo to heal! You will notice the fluid disappears after a few days, see the photos at the bottom of this page for a guide on what to expect.

TAKE THE FILM OFF IF:

The fluid leaks out, the tattoo is no longer sealed and there is a risk of bacteria getting in there!

The area feels uncomfortable, hot, itchy, red as this may be an allergic reaction to the adhesive. Wash thoroughly and follow aftercare option 2 if this happens.

To remove the dressing, pull gently and slowly, under warm running water in the shower and clean thoroughly with warm water and a gentle soap. Excess adhesive can be removed with adhesive removal wipes from the chemist.

If you’ve received a larger tattoo, the film is not recommended and I suggest you go with this option. Or if you prefer to heal without the film that is fine too!

Once the tattoo is finished, I will clean the area and apply clingfilm which we recommend you leave on for two hours.

After two hours, unwrap, wash the tattoo thoroughly with warm water and soap, making sure to get all the plasma, blood and ink off! Gentle soaps we recommend are:

QV wash

Cetaphil wash

Pat the area dry with a clean towel and let it dry for ten minutes. Then, with clean hands, apply a thin layer of your choice of cream/lotion. I recommend:

Hustle butter

Dr pickles

Coconut oil

Inkysalve

Tattoo goo

Repeat this process morning and night for 2-3 weeks. You may apply another layer of lotion on the tattoo if the tattoo is feeling very dry/tight. I recommend to wrap the tattoo before you go to sleep for the first 3-4 nights but let breathe during the day!

DO NOT PICK THE SCABS ON YOUR HEALING TATTOO. This can result in patchy healing and infection from dirty fingernails.

Keep your tattoo away from dirty environments, animals, sun, children and swimming/baths while it’s healing. Make sure to wear sunscreen when it’s healed!
